YEAR 2. WE ARE GROWING AND BECOMING “NICER.”

2024

After the first year with three trips and five ships, we're upping the ante in 2024. The first day event in cooperation with the Bavarian Yacht Club was a complete success. And as a bonus, we're also getting "nicer" and getting a new CI (logo, colors, claim).

Expenses within the projects

In 2024, we organized numerous sailing events for disadvantaged children and young people. The resulting costs are broken down as follows:

  • Charter costs for the ships
  • Travel expenses for guests and crew (partially covered by the participants themselves)
  • Catering costs on board and ashore
  • Mooring fees for marinas and buoy fields
  • Diesel costs for the yachts
  • Other trip costs that were necessary for the smooth running of the event

Donations received and how they were used

Thanks to numerous supporters, we were again able to generate sufficient financial resources for our projects in 2024:

  • We are particularly pleased that we were able to gain more permanent donors for Sail for Kids. As a result, the number of individual donations has decreased slightly, but financial planning security has increased.
  • Also, various foundations continue to stand firmly by our side, including:
  • Saving an Angel
  • Beerenburg Foundation
  • Peter Maffay Foundation
  • Kinderfonds-Stiftung GLÜCK IM UNGLÜCK
  • Josef-Wittmann-Stiftung

In addition, our commitment was supported by individual actions:

  • Hair salons and yoga studios have independently organized fundraising campaigns.
  • Numerous birthday parties were used to collect donations instead of gifts.
  • A participant in the Clipper Race – a round-the-world regatta – has linked our organization to an impressive fundraising campaign.

Financial stability and future plans

The donations received enabled us to cover all costs for the trips. Thanks to the generous discounts from some partners, such as charter companies, we were also able to build up project reserves this year, which will be used for future investments.

A larger-scale project for the coming years is currently being planned. We will provide more detailed information about this shortly.

TRIP REPORTS 2024

It is important to us to offer an honest look at our activities. That's why we accompany each trip on Instagram with its own story, including many pictures and videos of the impressions on site. Sometimes we are sent experience reports afterwards, which we would also like to share here.

INSTA STORY FEEDBACK

In May 2024, we started with two catamarans from Vodice on a special sailing adventure with the Spieli Children's Center. One child caught his first fish and then got his fishing license. During a beach clean-up, we collected huge amounts of plastic waste and made a valuable contribution to the environment. Another highlight: A non-swimmer took his first strokes in the water.
All in all, a successful trip that encouraged, inspired and created unforgettable moments!

Kinderhaus Kutzner, Lehre

INSTA STORY

In June 2024, we started with two monohulls from Biograd on an unforgettable adventure with a group that came to us via the Peter Maffay Foundation. A highlight was the night trip, where the children learned navigation using the lighthouses – a fascinating moment for everyone.
One day held special challenges that the crew mastered with team spirit and courage. These shared experiences created lasting memories and strengthened the children's self-confidence.
A trip full of unforgettable moments that have touched us all in a lasting way!

DIE ARCHE, Potsdam and Osnabrück

INSTA STORY FEEDBACK

The first trip for us with DIE ARCHE. The first ship is taken over by the children from Potsdam, the second from Osnabrück. We leave from Pula from the Marina Veruda. Together with the supervisors and children, the Kvarner Bay is conquered, the Blue Grotto is dived, a campfire is built, extensive dancing and "Duckface" selfies are taken and, as a highlight, the fear of 25kn wind is overcome. On the second day with strong wind, all the children sit on the foredeck and cheer at every gust and oncoming spray. What a great sight!

INSTA STORY

"Why not offer a Sail for Kids day for children and young people?"
We asked ourselves and turned to our friend Erik with this idea. Erik is not only an experienced skipper of our Sail for Kids family, but also an active member of the Bavarian Yacht Club. Together with the youth of the Bavarian Yacht Club, we then implemented our idea and organized the first Sail for Kids Day on Lake Starnberg on August 18, 2024. 11 children and young people from the Peter Maffay Foundation, who spent their vacations in the Tabaluga House Gut Dietlhofen, were there.
The hoped-for summer day did not show its best side, but that did not stop us from spending a wonderful day together on Lake Starnberg. After a short introduction, we put on our rain gear and went out on the water. Despite the wind and rain, the children were enthusiastic about taking the helm or simply enjoying the fresh breeze. Even the grill was fired up. A big thank you goes to the youth of the Bavarian Yacht Club, who helped us to give the children a great experience on Lake Starnberg.
We are already looking forward to the Sail for Kids Day 2025, which will again take place in cooperation with the youth of the Bavarian Yacht Club.

CREW 2024

These wonderful people donated their time to us in 2024 so that the children and families could enjoy a trip on a Sail for Kids ship.

Jürgen Steinbauer

Co-Skipper

Ahoy, I'm Jürgen.
Gliding through the water with the wind, feeling the elements and merging with them fascinates me and strengthens my passion for sailing every day.
This passion, coupled with the goal of giving children a different perspective on life for a short time, makes me proud and happy.
Sailing changes, sailing shapes, sailing gives strength and manages to bravely aim for the horizon.
I am grateful to be part of Sail for Kids as a co-skipper and look forward to what is to come!

Eric Hall

Skipper

Hi, I'm Eric. Jane and Philipp told me about Sail For Kids with great enthusiasm in our Haidhauser Hood and I'm happy to be a part of it since May 2024. In our family, everyone loves sailing and it's really exciting to be on the water with such a large crew of children and supervisors with Sail For Kids. The self-image of the sailors (aka seamanship) and the mission of Sail for Kids are a perfect match for me. I would also like to raise awareness among children about the protection of the seas and its inhabitants (I have been doing this with the NGO @orangeoceanorg for many years).

Helene Hall

Co-Skipper

Hey, I'm Helene. I came to Sail for Kids through my father (@ericriceice ) and took part in my first trip as a co-skipper with him in July 2024. It was a very great and exciting experience to see how the children all collect their first sailing experiences in their own way and blossom during this week. I started sailing as a small child. First together with my parents, with 8 years in the Optimist and later in the 420. Sail for Kids is a terribly great project and I am very much looking forward to further adventures and fun trips. 🙂

Momo

Co-Skipper

"Hi, I'm Momo and I'm at home in the Canary Islands. As a freediving instructor, sailor and skipper trainer, the oceans and water are my play and learning environment. I live and teach Freediving & Functional Breathing as powerful tools to cultivate breath awareness and control, a space for inner stillness and mental resilience in an ever faster and louder world. At Sail for Kids, I look forward to bringing my love for water & nature, and maybe a few lessons from the world of freediving, and experiencing magical moments on the water with you all!"

Ronja Schwartz

Co-Skipper

Hi, I'm Ronja.
In the summer of 2024 I was on the road with Sail for Kids as a co-skipper.
It was mega cool to observe how sailing and living together on the boat strengthened the team spirit and cohesion of the young people.
It was a lot of fun to accompany the kids in growing beyond themselves and overcoming their fears.
I have been sailing with my family since 2017 and love it. On a sailing class trip, I was able to experience for myself what such an experience has for a positive influence on children and young people.
I am very much looking forward to the next adventures in this great project.

Tino Taupp

Co-Skipper

My name is Tino. My long-time friend and companion Ümit infected me with the sailing virus over 20 years ago and thanks to him I have been able to live the magic of sailing to this day.
When Ümit told me about his Sail for Kids project, I didn't have to think about it for long. I really wanted to be part of this wonderful project. The idea of bringing sailing ⛵ closer to kids who are not exactly on the sunny side of life and being able to experience the magic of "the journey is the destination" with them immediately inspired and convinced me. When I was allowed to accompany Ümit as a co-skipper in May 2024, it was immediately decided that Sail for Kids would receive my permanent support!

It is simply more than magical to see and feel when you can do something good for the kids with it. I am very much looking forward to everything that is to come in order to continue to see shining children's eyes that also feel the magic of sailing.....

Til Schwartz

Skipper

Hi, I'm Til and I've been sailing with great passion since I was a child.
I have been regularly on the water with my family since 2017 and we enjoy the relaxation and challenges of sailing.
This year I was on board as skipper for Sail for Kids for the first time. Forming the framework for the kids' experience on board as well as on and in the sea and accompanying them was a lot of fun for me.
Experiencing the curiosity and openness of the young people for nature and unfamiliar surroundings and encouraging them to dare to steer a ship, to overcome the fear of the water, to support each other in crisis situations and to experience unforgettable moments was and is a great motivation for me. I am looking forward to further trips with shining children's eyes, laughter, romping, profound and moving conversations. A big thank you to the Sail for Kids team around Steffi, Jane, Philipp and Ümit and of course also to all those who support the project financially.

Philipp Lenner

Skipper

Hi! I'm Philipp. I am the co-founder and managing director of Sail for Kids, but more importantly: a passionate sailor and convinced that we can help many more children with our offer. Sailing has something magical that changes people for the better. That's exactly what we want to use for the children. We need your support for that. THANK YOU!

Ümit Uzun

Skipper

Hello! I'm Ümit! I have been sailing for 20 years and as the founder and head of a yacht charter agency, I am also professionally involved in the sailing theme. In 2021, I had the idea for the first time to take disadvantaged children sailing. What has developed from this is so incredibly beautiful and I am so grateful to have founded this wonderful organization together with my wife and friends, where we conjure up far "more" than a valuable smile on the lips of children and prepare them for life with the power of nature.
At Sail for Kids, I primarily take care of marketing, social media presence and am our link to the nautical industry.
